Nu Minds Tutoring – SQL Sprint

Zero to Query Hero

OBJECTIVES

The key objectives of the SQL Sprint workshop were to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and terminology of Structured Query Language (SQL), equip them with the ability to write and execute queries effectively, and enhance their understanding of database operations and real-world applications. The program aimed to build confidence in database management while encouraging students to think analytically and logically.

EVENT OVERVIEW

The IEEE HKN Nu Eta Chapter successfully organized a five-day online workshop titled "SQL SPRINT: Zero to Query Hero" from 27th October to 1st November 2025. The program provided a foundational understanding of SQL and helped students develop essential database management skills through practical, hands-on learning.

Conducted online via Google Meet, the sessions were led by Keerthika S (3rd Year CSBS) and Khahini B I (3rd Year Mech), both HKN members. The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Dr. K. Soma Prathiba, IEEE HKN Nu Eta Chapter Advisor, who motivated the participants and emphasized the importance of developing strong technical and analytical skills in the domain of database management.

The sessions were structured to be interactive and practical, with each day focusing on specific SQL concepts. Students didn't just observe—they wrote queries alongside the instructors, solved exercises in real-time, and shared their outputs during the sessions. The balance of theoretical understanding and practical implementation made the learning experience both comprehensive and engaging.

SQL Sprint Session Day 1

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

Day 1: Introduction to SQL and Basic Terminology
Students were familiarized with key database concepts and SQL fundamentals. The session laid the groundwork for understanding relational databases and their importance in modern applications.

Day 2: SQL Commands and Clauses
Focused on DDL (Data Definition Language), DML (Data Manipulation Language), and essential SQL clauses such as WHERE, GROUP BY, and ORDER BY. Students learned to structure and filter data effectively.

Day 3: SQL Functions
Covered aggregate and scalar functions with practical query demonstrations. Students explored functions like COUNT, SUM, AVG, MAX, MIN, and string manipulation functions.

Day 4 & 5: SQL Operators and Joins
Explored different types of operators, inner and outer joins, and real-time query practice. Students learned to combine data from multiple tables and perform complex queries with confidence.

Each session concluded with short interactive exercises and homework assignments to reinforce understanding and ensure practical application of the concepts learned.
